Caitlyn Baby Name Popularity Plunges Because of Caitlyn Jenner
Posted on May 13, 2017
The popularity of the name Caitlyn as a choice for newly named babies has plunged and it is all because of Caitlyn Jenner. The Social Security department released new information indicating the name plunged in popularity after Bruce Jenner became Caitlyn Jenner in 2015.
CBS News reports that the name Caitlyn was already falling in popularity before the Caitlyn Jenner announcement but all four variations of the name fell out of the top 1,000 names after the announcement. Emma was the most popular name for girls last year and Noah was the most popular for boys.
The loss of popularity is not necessarily entirely because of homophobia. The article quotes Baby Name Wizard founder Laura Wattenberg who says parents tend to avoid names that might "attract controversy." She says, "Even parents who are huge Donald Trump supporters are unlikely to name their child Donald."
Caitlyn Jenner has certainly been controversial. She has even been angering her own family lately and not because of her sex change, but through excerpts from her tell-all book, The Secrets of My Life. It is possible the Caitlyn name could regain some of its lost popularity in a few years after Caitlyn has been out of the news and tabloids.
