Avril Lavigne Tears Up While Discussing Lyme Disease on Nightline

Posted on July 1, 2015

Avril Lavigne, 30, was interviewed by Nightline about her tough battle with Lyme disease. Avril teared up during part of the interview conducted by ABC News' Jesse Palmer.

Lyme disease is a tick-borne disease. Some of the symptoms include fever, headache, rashes, fatigue and joint aches. Avril says she felt like she was dying as she battled the disease. It is not unusual for Lyme disease diagnosis to take sometime as multiple other illnesses are considered and ruled out first. Avril's illness began with night sweats and it was two months before she was properly diagnosed.

Avril says, "I was seeing every specialist. And they would pull up their computer and be like, chronic fatigue syndrome. They would be like 'Why don't you get try and get out of bed Avril and just go play the piano? Are you depressed? ' This is what they do to a lot of people who have Lyme disease. They don't have an answer for them so they tell them like - they tell them like you are crazy."

Avril cried during the interview as she explained how she cried when her fans supporting her helped her recover from the disease. She told Nightline, "I sat there in my bed and I watched the videos. And like did exactly what I am doing right now. I cried through the whole thing. And honestly, I felt very, very loved."
