The Avengers set a box office record with a weekend opening of over $200 million. The monumental opening catapults the Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly and Doctor Horrible's Sing-Along Blog creator and fan favorite Joss Whedon into an elite group of writer/directors. The opening weekend beat the previous record of $169 million, held by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. You can see a chart of the record opening weekends of all-time here.
Think Like a Man, which won the previous two weekends, fell to second and made $8 million. The Hunger Games finished third and added $5.7 million to bring its huge box office gross to $380 million. The Hunger Games was followed by The Lucky One, The Pirates! Band of Misfits and The Five-Year Engagement.
