The film is based on the award-winning short story by Ted Chiang called "Story of Your Life." The original story has been expanded quite a bit and some subplots added to make the story a viable feature film. In the short story the globe-changing events from Dr. Banks' point of view. Her life as well as her way of looking at the world was completely changed by her interactions with the aliens and there was a great deal of technical information about linguistics that is difficult to translate into a film, but from the trailer it appears that director Denis Villeneuve (Sicario, Prisoners)has managed to do it.
