Ant-Man Tops Box Office for Second Straight Weekend

Ant-Man won the box office for the second consecutive weekend. The Marvel film starring Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man made $24.8 million. It has now made $106 million after two weekends in theaters.

Ant-Man fended off Pixels to take the #1 slot. Pixels is a science fiction comedy thriller starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James and Michelle Monaghan. Pixels was unable to draw large audiences despite its use of over-sized classic Arcade characters like Pac-Man and Q*Bert. It underperformed with an opening of $24 million. It had a B CinemaScore.

Pixels was followed by Minions, which made $22 million during its third weekend in theaters and Trainwreck, which made $17.3 million during its second weekend in theaters. Minions has now passed the $250 million mark with a domestic gross of $261 million.

Southpaw starring Jake Gyllenhaal had a solid opening. The film has an A CinemaScore. Deadline reports that the boxing film drew an evenly split male and female crowd.

South Paw was followed by Paper Towns, which is based on the John Green novel. The film starring Cara Delevingne and Nat Wolff had a solid opening of $12.5 million. It has a B+ CinemaScore. Paper Towns was followed by Inside Out, Jurassic World and Mr. Holmes. Jurassic World has now made $623.8 million in the U.S. to move it into third position on the list of the highest domestic grosses of all time. It will need to make another $35 million to pass Titanic for the #2 spot.
